Claude has no daily message cap, and most people don't know how its limits really work. Here is the short version, in 10 points.
- It's a rolling 5-hour window, not a daily cap. The window starts with your first message.
- Start at 09:47 and your window runs until 14:47. It doesn't reset at midnight or on the hour.
- One shared allowance: claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code all draw from the same pool.
- Messages don't all cost the same. Claude re-reads the whole thread each time you send, so long conversations use up your limit faster.
- Easiest win: start a new chat for each new topic.
- Anthropic describes plans as multiples, not message counts: Pro is at least 5x Free, and Max 5x and Max 20x are 5x and 20x Pro.
- Since May 2026, Claude Code's 5-hour limits are doubled on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, and it no longer gets smaller limits at peak hours.
- Usage limit ≠ context window. The first is how much you can send over time; the second is how much Claude can hold in one conversation (up to 1M tokens on paid plans).
- On paid plans you can keep working past the limit with usage credits, billed at API rates up to a monthly cap you set.
- How to decide: if you hit the limit now and then, turn on credits; if you hit it every week, move up a plan; if you hit it every day, change your habits before paying more.
